Laois

Overview: What to say about Lois…what to say…well, the name is pronounced “leash." That’s an interesting fact, isn’t it? And then there’s…or we can say…hmmm.

To be perfectly honest, there’s not much to say about Laois. Football is the dominant sport in the county, and the hurling squad has not enjoyed much success in recent years. Laois's only All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship win was back in 1915 when the day was so wet the team reportedly played the second half in their overcoats.

There’s an interesting bit of trivia for you!

Nickname: The O'Moore County

We have no idea where this name comes from. Absolutely no idea – even Wikipedia wasn’t much help.

American Comparison: New Jersey Nets. Laois is effectively a suburban team, only an hour away from Dublin on the M7, so it makes sense that they would find themselves of lesser importance in the area, much like the New Jersey Nets are to the New York Knicks (well, not recently – but you know what we mean).

Colors/Jerseys: Blue and white

Rivals: Um….I suppose anyone in Leinster would be a rival, wouldn’t they? No notable ones worth mentioning though.

Sponsor: The Heritage Hotel

Notable Players: Darren Rooney. Rooney is one of the few players in the GAA who suits up for both his county’s hurling and football teams. And while he hasn’t won any hardware during his time with the hurling squad, he did win the Leinster Senior Football Championship in 2003

Stadium: O'Moore Park, Portlaoise

Frequency of televised matches: Rare
